Description
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN was designed in part to discover the Higgs boson, which it observed in 2012. Since then, researchers have extended the reach of CMS well beyond its original goals. This study uses the CMS muon system to search for long-lived particles (LLPs), a signature predicted by many theories beyond the Standard Model. The muon system was built to identify muons, not to detect LLP decays, so dedicated Level-1 (L1) and High-Level Trigger (HLT) paths were developed to select events in which an LLP decays and produces a particle shower in the muon detectors. To verify that the L1 trigger selects these events as intended, we measure its efficiency using 2025 proton–proton collision data at √s = 13.6 TeV.
